Welcome Mrs. Kerstin Santarelli

Oakland’s New Principal

On April 28, Oakland staff held a reception to meet and greet its new principal for the 2008-09 school year.  We would like to welcome Mrs. Santarelli to our Oakland family. She will begin her role as principal on July 1 after being appointed to the position earlier this month.  Mrs. Santarelli has been an administrator at Lakes Community High School for the past three years and was previously a math specialist and middle school math teacher in Kenosha.  She holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse and a master’s degree in educational administration from National Lewis University.  She currently resides with her husband and two children in Kenosha, WI.  We all look forward to working with Mrs. Santarelli in the upcoming school year!

 Field Day 2008

Field Day endured many weather adversities this year, but we were finally able to make it happen.  Thanks to Mr. Orlow for organizing the event, PTO for purchasing t-shirts and to all our parent volunteers, the kids had a great time!

 Fourth Grade Regions Day

For fourth graders, the culmination of their study of the United States is Regions Day.  Students share their state reports, often along with special treats from that state, with parents and peers. State related games were also part of the fun of their presentation.

 Fifth Grade Picnic

The fifth graders celebrated their ‘graduation’ from Oakland with a picnic at the Lindenhurst Park District. Students ate and played a variety of games during their fun afternoon.

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
Two of our Oakland staff members, Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Menges, along with their mom and sister, participated in the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer this past weekend in Chicago. They walked a total of 26.2 miles in two days.  Overall, there were 4,000 walkers that raised a total of 9.1 million dollars for a great cause. Remember, your quarters brought in on Q-day went toward this fundraiser.
Congratulations Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Menges
on completing this event. We're proud of you!

Thanks to all who brought in quarters on Q-day. We are proud to say the total amount collected from students and staff was $440.  This money will be donated to the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer of which Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Menges participated in.
Thank you to all who contributed!

The Elementary Band Performs

The District #34 Elementary Band consisting of fourth and fifth graders showed Oakland just how hard they have been working this year.  We all enjoyed their performance, especially the songs from The Wizard of Oz and a round of Take Me Out to the Ballgame.

AUGS Choirs Tour Stops at Oakland

On May 23 we had a special presentation put on by the AUGS Choir.  Students and staff enjoyed the music and seeing some old friends.

K-9 Safety Demonstration

On Thursday, May 22, third graders at Oakland School had an opportunity to see a K-9 demonstration. Alex, a trainer from TOPS, presented information to our students as Officer Vince Utter gave the demonstration with the help of his partner Bullet. Students were able to learn how police dogs play an important role in the police department and see firsthand how these dogs help fight crime.

One Fourth Graders State Report Features a Special Guest

Mary was working on her Oklahoma state report when an opportunity came up to interview a special person from that state.  Prepared with her questions, Chicago Bears player JD Runnels, came to Oakland to answer her questions.  JD,  Bears full back #48, took time to answer all Mary's questions, as well as those of many other students. We were in awe as we got to check out his Super Bowl ring.  View the Photo Album for lots more pictures. Click here for more information about JD.

Muffins with Mom

Students and their moms have enjoyed some early morning time at school while feasting on muffins and drinks during “Muffins with Mom”.  It fun to see the moms and kids sharing some time together!Look for more pictures in the Photo Album.
